(Note: though that novel has now been majorly spoiled for me by the events in this one, it still sounds like a great read. This novel picks up the story of Jake Brigance – a small town lawyer who was at the heart of Grisham’s first novel A Time to Kill. I have no idea whether Grisham’s representation of small town Mississippi is realistic, but then, I also didn’t realise immediately that this novel was set in 1988 – so I guess I’ll just take the scene at face value. Somehow though, leafing through Sycamore Row brought such a great sense of familiarity, I had finished the first few chapters before I had even realised I was reading it. I know I have definitely read John Grisham books before… but I can’t for the life of me remember any of the particulars. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lazlo faces an unthinkable choice-save the woman he loves, or everyone else?-while Sarai feels more helpless than ever. ![]() One a god, the other a ghost, they struggle to grasp the new boundaries of their selves as dark-minded Minya holds them hostage, intent on vengeance against Weep. Asked to investigate the case by his old friend Hastings.Hastings Poirots friend, and the narrator of the story. He lives in England after being displaced by the war in Europe. Which, in my mind, made reading the book worthwhile even though it was not my favourite. Hercule Poirot Renowned Belgian private detective. On a more positive note, however, I did enjoy the final unraveling of the mystery, leading to the reveal of the killer. In terms of narration, Jeff Woodman was okay, but I much prefer Hercule Poirot books that are narrated by Hugh Fraser. One of Poirots major appeals to readers at the time was that he eschewed the self-importance and brooding somberness of traditional detective figures. Nevertheless, I admit that I skim read through a few chapters to get to the end. Their interactions in The Mysterious Affair at Styles are of special note because it is Christies first novel and therefore their first time working together. I suppose that was owing to this being the author's first book. I just found that the mystery in A Mysterious Affair at Styles wasn't incredibly captivating, and was not up to the standards as the other two books in the series that I had read. Hercule Poirot is a fastidious and intelligent Belgian detective living temporarily in England. I mean, don't get me wrong, this book wasn't bad, per se. The Mysterious Affair at Styles Hercule Poirot. After having read other books in the Hercule Poirot series, I decided that it was well past time that I went back to go back to where it all began and read A Mysterious Affair at Styles. ![]() ![]() ![]() She leaves him to return to prostitution several times. The relationship between the two represents the relationship between God and Israel. God tells Hosea to go marry a prostitute named Gomer. The book is about God's frustration and anger toward Israel. The relationship between Hosea and Gomer is only briefly described. The biblical book of Hosea is not a love story. I expected to read 14 chapters of an amazing love story detailing the relationship of a fallen Gomer who marries Godly Hosea. However, I had never actually studied it. I had read parts of it here and there when pastors or Bible study leaders had referred to it. I have to first admit that I had never actually studied the book of Hosea. That sounds downright shameful so let me explain. Now, it grieves me to say I was disappointed in a book of the Bible. I mentioned that before I see the movie, I would like to read the book so a friend loaned me the book, but before I began to read the novel by Francine Rivers, I decided that I had better read the original historical event from the Bible itself first.
